Als funktionelle Gruppe wird in der Chemie eine Atomgruppe mit genau definierter Struktur bezeichnet, die Heteroatome enthält und einer organischen Verbindung charakteristische Eigenschaften verleiht, die für eine bestimmte Stoffgruppe typisch sind. Die Heteroatome sind meist Sauerstoff, Stickstoff, Schwefel, Phosphor und eventuell auch verschiedene Metalle.
